Youth Violence Prevention Worker/ Culture Camp Coordinator

The after-school hours are the peak time for juvenile crime and risky behaviors such as alcohol and drug use. Most experts agree that after-school programs offer a healthy and positive alternative. This program will keep kids safe, improve academic achievement and help relieve the stresses on today’s working families. It will also serve as an important youth violence prevention and intervention strategy.

Responsibilities:
•Ensure effective client file administration
•Deliver culturally relevant programming in conjunction with the western justice system
•Deliver youth prevention and intervention programs and services
•Provide youth empowerment activities for afterschool
•Coordinate workshops that enhance client rehabilitation
•Individual intervention and case planning
•Coordinate culture camps through the summer months
Qualifications:
•A minimum of 2 – 5 years experience in a related Social Work field
•Excellent Public Relations Skills
•Effective Organizational Skills are an asset.
•Personally flexible and culturally sensitive
•Centered and a team player; a positive lifestyle
•Effective written and verbal communication skills
•Excellent computer skills
•Ability to multi-task

General Requirements for all positions include:
•An understanding of Wet’suwet’en Culture and systems
•Valid BC Drivers license and reliable vehicle
•Satisfactory references, including a criminal record check

Family Support Worker

The Office of the Wet’suwet’en (OW) requires the services of a half time Family Support Worker for the Wet’suwet’en Early Childhood Development Program.

The Family Support Worker reports to the Early Childhood Development Coordinator. The Family Worker is responsible for recruiting and welcoming new families, enrolment, registration, providing on-going support to families through referrals to community and government agencies.

The Family Support Worker is responsible for facilitation of parent involvement in preschool programs according to Aboriginal Head Start Principles and Guidelines. The Family Support Worker is responsible for maintaining documents and records in compliance with applicable privacy legislation. The Family Support Worker will provide classroom and school bus support to preschool aged children when required.

The position will involve networking and creating linkages with components and related community agencies.

The successful candidate will possess the following expertise:

•Valid Early Childhood Education Certificate & License to Practice (Basic), Child and Youth Care, or other relevant training and experience,
•Valid safety oriented first-aid certificate (i.e. Child Safe First Aid or accepted equivalent).
•Clear Criminal Records Check conducted under the Criminal Record Review Act.
•A physician’s letter / note indicating mental and physical health is adequate for the position.
•Positive character references.
•Personality and health appropriate to the position.
•Class 4 driver’s license (prefer class 2).
•Access to reliable vehicle for home visits & other transportation needs preferred.
•Excellent computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
•Self directed and able to initiate and complete projects
•Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
•Knowledge of Aboriginal culture traditions, history.
•Experience working with Aboriginal people

The Office of the Wet’suwet’en offers a competitive salary and benefits package. Employment is subject to a 3-month probationary period and evaluation.
